After the movie, we walked in silence back to the truck. It had been a much more emotional movie than I had counted on and I hoped it hadn't ruined the tone of the night. Her tears in the middle had slain me, but I thought I understood them. It had hit me like a truck as well. I was Lulu in that scenario. I completely empathized with that dog—wanting so much to help but being unable to do anything but be there.

Her grip on my hand remained firm as we reached the truck. I opened the door for her, helping her inside with a glimmer of hope that her tight hold was a positive sign. Jogging quickly around to the driver's door, I caught a glimpse of her bringing the flowers to her nose again. That was a point in my favor, anyway.

Taking her hand again after starting the engine seemed like the most natural thing in the world to me at that moment. I even raised her hand to my lips and brushed another kiss there. I caught the hint of a smile on her pretty lips before I pulled out onto the street. Maybe things were going as well as I hoped after all.

"That was pretty intense," I said, feeling like the silence was becoming too heavy.

"It had its moments," she answered. "But the ending was great and there were a bunch of funny parts."

She giggled. "It didn't take Lulu long to have him wrapped around her little, uh, paw."

"I know the feeling," I muttered.

"What?" She cocked her head at me. I was thankful she hadn't heard the comment.

"I saw that," I said, figuring that should cover it. "The Olive Branch was good," I tried after another few uncomfortable moments of silence stretched between us. We'd never been short of things to say to each other before.

"It was!" she agreed enthusiastically. "The homemade pita was especially good. And the tzatziki."

"Mmm," I agreed.

I hazarded a quick glance over at her. She looked…content. That made my insides unclench a bit. Content was reassuring.

It didn’t take long to get back to the cabin as we passed only one old, ramshackle-looking Mazda on the road back to the ranch. Pulling up and parking as usual, I hopped out and ran to the other side to open Reece’s door.

"May I walk you to your door, Mrs. King?" I asked in what I hoped was a playful tone and held out my hand.

I saw a blush creep across her cheeks in the overhead light of the cab. It pleased me beyond words that doing this silly thing for her could bring her such pleasure. After everything she had been through, a truly sweet soul was still in there.

"Yes. Thank you very much, Mr. King." She giggled and the sound shot straight to my groin. Damn! I was in big trouble.

We walked up the steps to the porch side by side and I turned to face her in front of the door. "Here we are.
